Capt'n Eli's Root Beer, Portland, ME

Product Code: R-CA

Description Technical Specs
This popular root beer not only has a fantastic taste, but a rich background and even a graphic novel! In 1920, the Forsley family began making homemade root beer. As a young boy, founder Eli Forsley would steal root beer from his father's supply and sell it around the neighborhood. He was destined to create and sell root beer from the start. Eli grew up and served in the Navy during World War II. He eventually started his own family with his lovely wife Agnes, and resurrected the tradition of homebrew root beer with his five children. In 1992, one of Eli's sons, Frank founded Federal Jack's Restaurant and Brew Pub in Kennebunkport, Maine. Two years later, he started Shipyard Brewing Company in Portland, which quickly became one of Maine's largest breweries. In 1996, he began brewing the recipe he used with his father when he was younger and sold it on tap at Federal Jack's. It had no name until someone suggested "Capt'n Eli", which immediately stuck. By 2002 this brew was so popular that he and his business partner, Alan, decided to bottle it. They sold 5,000 cases in Maine alone! They even created a comic book to help promote their root beer, called The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli.

The taste of Capt'n Eli's Root Beer is unlike any other. It has a traditional feel to it, with the essence of wintergreen oil, anise, and vanilla. The head on this root beer is amazingly tall and frothy with vanilla and anise tasting foam. The after taste is a strong anise and vanilla flavor as well. Definitely a quality root beer.
